This is one of the strongest cases for importing in the whole catalogue, and it is a quiet one. Indian editions of these texts are printed for readers who want the Sanskrit alongside the translation, they come from publishers with long scholarly traditions such as Gita Press, the Ramakrishna Math and Motilal Banarsidass, and they cost a fraction of what a Western academic edition does. Much of what is easy to find in American bookshops is a modern retelling rather than a translation, which is a different thing and not always labelled as one.

Decide what you actually want before choosing an edition. A word-by-word Sanskrit text with transliteration and commentary is a study edition and reads slowly. A plain English translation reads straight through. A retelling is a story built from the text rather than the text itself. All three are legitimate and all three sit on this shelf, and the listing description is where the difference shows.

One practical note. Indian paperbacks are printed on lighter paper than American trade editions and are bound accordingly, which is part of why they cost what they do. For a book you will open daily, a hardback edition is worth the difference; for reading once, it is not.
