Chyawanprash is a cooked preserve built on amla, the Indian gooseberry, blended with ghee, honey and a long list of herbs. It is eaten by the spoonful, usually in the colder months, and the taste surprises people the first time: sour and sharp before it turns sweet, closer to tamarind than to jam.
Brands differ more than the shelf suggests. Some are sugar-heavy and mild, aimed at children; others are bitter and herb-forward in the classical style. Sugar-free versions exist and are worth reading the label for if that matters to you. The ingredient count is a reasonable proxy for how classical a preparation is, since the traditional formulations run to forty ingredients or more.
One thing to be clear about: chyawanprash is a food supplement, not a medicine, and nothing here is intended to treat a condition. If you are pregnant, diabetic or taking prescription medication, the honey and sugar content and the herb list are both worth raising with your doctor before you start.
