What to Wear for Navratri, and How to Buy It From Abroad
A chaniya choli is not a lehenga, and the difference matters once you have danced in one for four hours. What the outfit actually needs to do, and how to order it from the USA in time.
Most Navratri outfits sold outside India are lehengas with the word Navratri attached. They photograph well and they are the wrong garment. Garba is four hours of continuous movement, and the clothing developed around that: a fuller skirt cut to flare when you spin, lighter fabric that survives a warm hall, and a fitted choli that stays where it is put.
The three things that make it right
The flare comes from panel count. A chaniya choli is built from many gored panels rather than a few wide ones, which is what produces the circle when you turn. A skirt described as A-line or straight will not do it regardless of how much fabric is in it.
The weight is deliberate. Cotton, rayon and lightweight silk blends dominate because a heavy bridal fabric becomes unbearable in an hour. Mirror work, called abhla, adds visual weight without physical weight, which is exactly why it became the signature of the form.
The regional traditions are real distinctions, not marketing. Bandhani is the tie-dye of Gujarat and Rajasthan, tied by hand in thousands of tiny points before dyeing. Kutch embroidery comes from the communities of the Kutch district and carries specific motifs. Both take time to make, which is why the good ones are not cheap and the cheap ones are printed imitations.
Ordering from the USA
Order about a month before the first night. Shipping from India runs 10 to 15 business days, and Indian workshops are at their most backed up in the weeks before the festival, so the two delays stack.
Expect to have it altered. Cholis are usually sold with extra fabric at the seams specifically so a tailor can fit them, which reads as unfinished if you are not expecting it and is actually the point. Budget for a local tailor and a week.
Go by the measurement chart, never the letter. Indian sizing runs smaller, and a choli is fitted, so a medium here is not a medium you are used to. Measure a garment you already own and compare numbers.
