Kajal, kohl and surma all describe the same idea, a dense black line worked along the lash line and often inside the waterline, but they are not the same product. What we list is modern cosmetic kajal from Indian brands: pencil or stick formulations manufactured to cosmetic standards, in the smudge-proof and waterproof versions that most people actually want.
There is a safety point here that is worth stating plainly, because it is specific to this category and to buying it in the United States. The FDA has repeatedly warned that traditional kohl, kajal and surma, particularly the loose powders and homemade preparations sold in some markets, can contain high levels of lead, and kohl is not an approved colour additive for cosmetics in the US. Lead exposure matters most for children and during pregnancy. This is why we list branded cosmetic kajal from established manufacturers and do not list traditional loose surma at all.
On the product itself: kajal is softer and denser than a Western eyeliner pencil, which is what makes it sit in the waterline without dragging, and it is also why a non-waterproof one migrates within a few hours. If you want it to stay, buy the waterproof version and expect to need an oil based or biphasic remover to take it off. Sharpening a soft kajal in a cheap sharpener tears it, so a wide barrel sharpener or a retractable stick is the practical choice.

- Is kajal safe to use in the waterline?
- Branded cosmetic kajal is formulated for it. Traditional loose kohl and surma are a different matter: the FDA has warned that these can contain high levels of lead, and we do not list them. Buy the branded product, and if a listing is not clear about what it is, do not.
- What is the difference between kajal and eyeliner?
- Texture and purpose. Kajal is softer and denser so it can be applied inside the waterline without dragging. Eyeliner is firmer, drier and made for a defined line along the lash line or above it.
- Why does my kajal smudge within an hour?
- Most likely it is not the waterproof formulation, and the waterline is wet by design. Waterproof versions hold considerably longer, and setting the line with a dark powder helps on oily lids.
- How do I remove waterproof kajal?
- An oil based or biphasic remover on a cotton pad, held against the closed eye for a few seconds before wiping. Rubbing a waterproof formula off dry is how people lose lashes.
