Gulab by Annie Zaidi is a book that brings alive the world of the dead in a poignant manner. on a hot and humid summer day, Nikunj pays a visit to a Muslim burial ground. He is there to attend the burial ceremony of Saira, who was his sweetheart in the past and whom he was searching for ever since an earthquake tore them apart. For years now he had been trying to trace her, even though he is married. However, he had no idea what he would do if he ever found her. The presence of Usman and Pramod at the cemetery, however, leaves him puzzled. Also, he meets Gulab and Mumtaz, whom he has never met before but who have taken over the gravesite. This book is essentially a story about love, with a supernatural angle. It explores the possibility of a living person having a relationship with a dead person. It was written based on the idea that, though we all live with the belief that a ghost cannot do things that the living can do, for instance grow old and have children, maybe we need to think twice about the lengths to which a ghost can go to. It makes readers wonder what they would do if a woman's ghost wants to reclaim her position in their lives and never wants to leave and takes the concept of the limitless powers of ghosts to the next level.
