इतिहासकार रोमिला थापर की यह पुस्तक भारतीय संदर्भ में इतिहास और काल संबंधी अवधारणाओं की विस्तृत पड़ताल करती है। यह किताब उन मान्यताओं को नकारती है जिनके अनुसार आदिकालीन भारत में सिर्फ चक्रीय काल की अवधारणा ही प्रचलित थी और आदिकालीन भारतीय समाज में इतिहास दृष्टि का अभाव था। इन मान्यताओं के उलट यह किताब दर्शाती है कि आदिकालीन भारत में काल की चक्रीय अवधारणा के साथ-साथ रेखीय अवधारणा भी प्रचलित थी। कालसंबंधी रेखीय धारणा के प्रमाण वंशावलियों, चरितों, इतिवृत्तों में स्पष्ट देखने को मिलते हैं, जहाँ कालगणना पीढ़ियों, शासन-काल के वर्षों और संवतों के आधार पर की गई है। रोमिला थापर के अनुसार आदिकालीन भारत में काल की चक्रीय धारणा का इस्तेमाल जहाँ सृष्टिकालीन संदर्भ में होता था, वहीं रेखीय धारणा का इस्तेमाल ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ में किया जाता था। इस किताब का निष्कर्ष है कि आदिकालीन भारत में ऐतिहासिक चेतना विद्यमान थी। English TranslationIn this book, Romila Thapar examines the link between time and history through the use of cyclic and linear concepts of time. While the former occurs in a cosmological context, the latter is found in familiar historical forms. The author argues for the existence of historical consciousness in early India, on the evidence of early texts. This is the Hindi translation of the English edition.
