Jacquard's Procion MX fiber reactive dye powder is best used as fabric dye for cotton, linen or other natural, plant-based fibers. It can be used with other fibers such as wool, alpaca, leather, and other protein-based fibers, however the tie dye dye solution should be mixed with either vinegar or citric acid for best results. Before application, your fabric or material should be soaked in a solution of one cup of soda ash to one gallon of water for about 20 minutes. This makes the clothing dye permanent and creates a washfast result. To get an even, brilliant color, use a ratio of one cup to 2 teaspoons of dye. This can be modified by diluting the mixture to create soft, dreamy pastels or increasing the concentration of dye to create deeper colors. The tie dye colors can also be mixed to create the perfect shade for your project! The dye powder goes a long way, as one 2/3oz jar will dye approximately 1lb of dry fabric. Once the dye is mixed, you can add it to a bottle for easy tie dyeing application, or add to a basin for dip dyeing or immersion dyeing. The traditional method of shibori tie-dye can be used as well by folding and tying your fabric into specific patterns and then applying the dye. Since the powder is in dye form before mixing, it's also great as ice dye powder, as the powder can be sprinkled on the ice and left to melt into your fabric.
