Maharani Jinda Kaur (1817 – 1863) was the youngest wife of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, and the mother of his only son Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last ruler of the empire. She became an influential and fierce political figure after Ranjit Singh’s death. When Duleep Singh ascended the throne as a child, Jind Kaur served as Regent of the Sikh Empire (1843 – 1847), effectively governing on his behalf. Jind Kaur is remembered for her bravery, political acumen, and resistance against British expansion in India following the Anglo-Sikh Wars. Her leadership made the British wary of her influence.
