The plot traveller Émile Gallet works through and through ordinary: unobtrusive clothing, stout cottage in the country. Less ordinary is the fact that he was apparently murdered in a hotel in Sancerre, but this is not at all in his travel area. And Maigret promotes other peculiarities: why did Gallet descend under a false name in the inn, Why does his wife continue to receive postcards from him? Everything indicates that Gallet has led a double life.
