Ned Penhallow, while playing with his younger brother Sam on the fallen branch of a storm-damaged tree, discovers a ring embedded deep in the trunk. Freeing the ring, he becomes embroiled in an age-old battle between the forces of Light and Dark. When his brother's soul is stolen by an evil sorcerer, Ned is forced on a perilous quest that leads him to a different world. With the help of a wizard, the daughter of a King's Thief, a gang of pirates and a dragon, Ned faces the forces of the Dark in a desperate attempt to rescue his brother.
