Do appliances and electronics bought in India work in the USA?

Often not. India runs on 230 volts at 50 hertz and the United States on 120 volts at 60 hertz, so anything built for Indian mains alone will not run correctly on American power, and a plug adapter does not change that. The exception is any device whose label reads 100 to 240 volts, which is built for both and needs nothing more than the right plug shape.

Check the label or the power brick before anything else. If it says 100 to 240V, 50/60Hz, the device has a universal supply and works anywhere. That covers most phone chargers, laptop adapters, most rechargeable grooming devices and a good deal of small consumer electronics. If it says 230V, 50Hz only, it was built for Indian mains and needs a step-up transformer sized to the load, which is bulky, and even then the frequency stays wrong.

Frequency is the part people miss. A voltage converter can change 120 volts to 230, but it does not turn 60 hertz into 50.
